Please forgive this intrusion into your busy lives. I
really hesitate to post this, due to it's lack of urgency,
and the fact that the ultimate future of the craft of
ceramics does not depend on it, but here goes:
Last week, I fired some cone 04 glaze samples. One of those
was called "Drabble", formulated by our friend Edouard
Bastarache, which I got from the Ceramics Web GlazeBase.
(Of course, I made a couple of substitutions.) It was
severely underfired at 04. Ugly brown, not melted much at
all, and felt like a cat's tongue.
Yesterday, I fired a load of cone 6, and decided to see how
Drabble looked at that temperature. It's on a red clay
(Flint Hills Clay) test tile. Well, it's beautiful. It's a
medium toasty brown with streaks like an honest to goodness
wood-fired wood ash glaze. Nicest where dipped twice. It
has a good feel, and shows carving well. It looks the most
"reduced" of any I've ever fired in my lowly electric kilns.
As I prepare to retest it, to make sure I didn't screw up
the recipe and to see if this result is repeatable, I
wondered:
A: If anyone else had tried this recipe, and what your
results were.
B: What "mistakes" could I have made which would have
caused these results? On my test record sheet, everything
is checked off correctly, so I don't think I forgot
anything. Could it be the difference between washed and
unwashed ash?
Here's the recipe:
----------------------------------
Drabble, cone 04 Oxidation
----------------------------------
Washed Hardwood Ash...50%
(I used unwashed, unidentified fireplace ash)
Custer Feldspar...15%
Ferro Frit 3134...20%
EPK...15%
Total...100%
Add:
Bentonite...2%
Ultrox...18% (I used Zircopax)
Red Iron Oxide...8%
----------------------------------
I appreciate any input, but please reply off list.
Thank you.

Hello Sylvia ,
I will send a scanned picture of it privately.
As you will see the surface is well melted.
Later,

Speaking for myself, of course, I'd be interested in reading the =
responses.
