the halo effect is a quick reoxidation around a metalic oxide stain. i think
soldner uses iron and/or copper oxides over a white slip. after the piece is
fired to red heat or whatever you fire your raku to, put it in newspaper and
cover it for 2 or 3 minutes. then take the lid off and lift the pot through
the flames. when you see the halo forming, dip the pot in water to freeze
it. it takes some practice and some luck to get it right. i got this
information from the artist's techniques section of "the craft and art of
clay" good luck

Is it done with the raku torch or with a small one, the kind that jewelers
are using?
