In making my own web page I find myself in a dilemma about where to =

Ed,
yes, counters just show the hit on the page it is placed on.... so if you
want to know the full realm of your visits you should put a counter on each
page... the freebies anyway, i have heard of some tracking things you can put
on that will tell where the person went thru your site during their visit,
but those are the kinds you pay for.

Ed,
I believe they count only the pages you have them on.
Why not post one on each page?
That way you can compare, home page to purchase page.

Hi all,
I'm new to the list and enjoy reading all your posts.
There is a free service by Webtrends, in which you insert or paste a code
(very simple) on your pages & keeps track of practically everything that
goes one in your website: number of visitors, most requested pages,
countries, referrers...etc. You can check your reports at any time.

Counters are a two edged sword. A counter that displays to the public can
be a turnoff if it shows some informaiton like "000123 visitis since
6/1/2000" That immediately tells the viewer that this site does not draw
much use and that those who do visit do not come back. I have built sites
for many companies and was technical director for a dotcom startup. I
would never put a counter on a page that is visible to the public.
There are a number of statistical programs that are available which give
you not only the count of page hits, but also such interesting information
as the URL of the page the person was viewing when they linked to your
site. If that URL indicated that they user came from YAHOO, Google, Lycos,
Altavista, etc. the report program is generally able to tell you the
search words that the user was using when they found your site. If the URL
says that they reached you from your local chamber of commerce's site, then
make sure you renew your membership, it is bringing you viewers, if not yet
sales.
Some of these reporting programs are Freeware, some are low priced
Shareware and there are also a few Aston Martins with prices to match. I
would ask your intenet service provider what statistics they normally
collect and what reporting programs they recommend. For some Web Servers
(like Apache), the default is to NOT collect the referring URL. It would
have to be turned on by the server owner. Also, the reporting programs
differ depending on the server that is being used. However, most service
providers use either Apache or Microsoft's Enterprise Server.
Just an opinion based on experience.

You can do both. A counter on the home page and
any other/s you select. You just have to submit
each URL/page separately. It is tiresome to set
up if you have many pages, but it is an option.
That is unless the counter provider insists it
is in a "prominent position" on the home page.
Maybe that is why I originally ended up placing
it on the home page and nowhere else? I don't
remember.
But I can tell you, if I was setting out again,
I would put a web counter like XOOM on the home
page (which has brilliant statistics inc. the
hits from individual countries, the most popular
day (Tuesday), which browsers & versions are
used, etc.) and then a simple counter like LE on
each of the other pages.
As The CoA web site now has over 80 pages, this
is no longer an option for me. Wish I had
thought it through from the start... Acquiring a
counter for each successive page built would not
have been too much trouble, whereas to register
them now would be very time consuming indeed.
Good luck with your building.

ED,
I got to this a little late but I tried a number of page counter strategies
and never got the info I needed. I later found Hitbox.com and have been very
happy. They provide a free snip of code that puts a graphic box on each
page. The code collects info on people moving through the site and places it
in a tabular and graphic form on a page Hitbox gives you. They have a
number of choices I use the free version which results in the box mentioned
above. I placed the box "below the fold" to make it as inconspicuous as
possible. They have an invisible version also but it costs around
$18.00/month. I have looked at other companies and Hitbox ofers the info I
want. The info helps me see how people move throughmy site and more
importantly now what browser versions they have and the plugins they have
instaled. This helps since am totally redesigning my site and will be using
a fair amount of java script.
If you want to see what it looks like check it out on my site. You can also
click on the graphic icon on any of my pages and it will take you directly
to their main site.
