clear glaze for covering velvets

Friends,

I know this is the lazy way out, but I have let time get away from
me, and I am supposed to be doing an Empty Bowl-making event
next weekend. We plan to decorate the bowls with Amaco Velvets
while green, then I will bisque and glaze with a clear. The question
-- can anyone who commonly does this recommend a good clear
for this purpose? I have lots of recipes, but no time to test, and
recent posts about glazescrawling over Velvets have made me
nervous. Any shared wisdom out there? Thanks!

at the risk of sounding unpopular,

I have a hunch that amaco has a clear that matches the underglaze perfectly.
just go whole hog on the last minute thing and get stuff done, you'll be
back to your regular thing in no time, no shame, just a little more $$.

if you call them, they probably can recomend something, and whatever recipe
someone gives you that fits the underglaze may not fit your clay body at
all. the underglazes usually have a really broad range and can work well
with just about anything, mostly i think its what you put them over that
makes the glaze goofy.

there should be an amaco clear that goes over the stuff and also works on
say stoneware, and another thats good for porcelein, talc, terracotta, the
whole schmele. those engineers are swell guys

best wishes,
sct

Chris:
Here is a good recipe for lowfire (04-06) covering amaco velvets, or any
other underglaze for that matter:

Patrick' 04 clear

frit 3195 81
EPK 5
ball clay 5
Neph sy 9
magnesium carb 2
bentonite 2

Be sure to apply this glaze very thinly. Too thick and it becomes milky.

Of course, any of the commercial clear glazes for lowfire are excellent. I
like Mayco C105.

The problem I have found with under glazes has been in the application.
After many years I finally learned to just follow the directions on the
underglaze bottle - that is: 3 even coats for opaque coverage. More than
that and you will have problems like crawling and shivering. Also
important to let the ug dry between coats.

Cheers, Sharon
