Just for starters, have you checked Device Manager to see if any there are
any big yellow question marks in the list that comes up when you do this:

Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager

In the meantime, I'll post your question to the computer gurus in a
newsgroup that I read and I'll omit your name, address, etc.. It is a group
moderated by Microsoft volunteers and I have gotten much invaluable and
timely and useful advice there.

Hi:

Sorry to be posting an off topic blurb to the list but I could use a bit of
assistance and I thought that perhaps some of you may have dealt with this
problem and could give me a hint or two. I've run all the scans and
diagnostics available to me and have come up with nary a clue as to what's
happening.

When I boot the computer, I get an "Unknown Device" window and then Win 98
wants to search for drivers for the device. I haven't installed any new
hardware, cards, or anything that would warrant this action. I also get
the Unknown Device message when I log on to the internet and this is when
it started happening. I'm thinking it may be a virus but it could also be
some sort of software conflict in my system. The computer is running
alright and I've not seen any problems with applications. I've downloaded
the latest virus definitions and scanned the hard drive and Norton says I'm
clean. I wonder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and please email me off list
at: >ashglaze@wvi.com<

thanks, Craig Martell in Oregon

Craig,
Go into the control panel.
double click the System icon.
Select the Device Manager tab.
Look for a yellow exclamation mark or I a red icon (cant remember what it looks
like)
This will tell you what device it's seeing. What has probably happened is resources
for an existing device
has been re-allocated and the Windows plug and play is too brain dead to clear it
all up.

contact me at barn@mediaone.net if you have problems.

Barney

I had that happening for awhile, asked computer, multi media deans list ,
animation, etc savy son about it. He said "ignore it and it will go away"
and it did. But all disclaimers apply. Here it was a computer hick-upp.
