cones melting

Patrice,
I have experienced the same problem myself. But only in the last two
bisque firings.Gas kiln. Cone 04 went to 1900 + on the pyrometor. I'm
going to put some kiln wash on the setter and see if that changes
things. The original wash may have worn off. I'm using the same cone
box so I don't think that is the problem. If this doesn't solve the
problem I'll fiddle with the weight adjustment. I never change too many
things at once. I always keep a watch on the time also since I know when
it should be close to temp. The odd thing is .... is that the Scutt
electric with the same setter is working fine at cone 04. Mike Gordon

Yes, it has happened to me. Cone just drooled all the way to the bottom of
the kiln. No idea why it happened, but everything was grossly overfired. I
guess I'm going to hear about the witness cones now, hey?
Dai in Kelowna, BC, who still doesn't use witness cones, but does keep a
very close eye on the colour of the kiln, and on the clock.

Has anyone heard of the cone melting to the cone sitter without it shutting
off? This happened at the school where I take classes and right now this
particular SKUTT kiln is out of commission. I'm just trying to understand
why this happened. Thanks for any answers.

Patrice,

I had this happen once, and I think a bit of glaze got dropped onto the
prongs along with the sitter bar. If your prongs are sticky (and they will
get that way eventually), you'll have this problem.

Dear Patrice,

This happened to me years ago. It's a good lesson to learn and a good
reason to always put witness cones in the kiln. It's also a good reason
not to leave a kiln unattended near the end of a firing. What happened
is the rod in the kiln sitter got so oxidized that it stuck to the cone.
Those
rods have to be replaced from time to time as well as the two metal pieces
that the cones rest on. Look in the instruction book that came with the
kiln sitter for Orton's phone number and order some extra parts.

Good luck,

Yes,
This has happened to me twice with my L&L going to bisk temps.
No glaze firings, so no glaze drips contributing to the problem.
I now remember to keep kiln wash on the parts where the cone
touches and haven't had it happen since...
Jennifer. off to check the kiln wash!

I had this problem once and found that it was caused by years of
accumulated "stuff" under the
trip rod. I removed the rod and took a file to clean out the passageway,
dusted with alumina,
and now check periodically with a probe. No problems since.

For regular maintenance of the kiln setter rod, dab a little kiln wash
on the end where it touches the cones. Also keep some kiln wash on the
prongs that hold the cone. Makes 'em last a lot longer.
