Mark,
When I was doing raku, the following recipe worked well for larger pieces
and withstood thermal shock well. I also used it for a complicated kitchen
back-splash/counter situation because I could make it in the green stage to
match the actual space and after firing the total clay shrinkage ( about 5%
I think it was) would be no more then what the grout lines for the 4inch
tile would compensate for. The tiles were fired to ^10 and came out very
nice.
1 part goldart stoneware
1 part AP Green fireclay
1 part 35 mesh kyanite
I believe the 35mesh kyanite serves to open up the clay like grog would, add
thermal shock resistance, and cuts down on drying and especially firing
shrinkage. I add some to all my clay now.

Hello everybody:
I need some advice. I have recently been hired to do
a tile job for a fireplace surround. I was wondering if anybody could give me
some advice on a claybody that would stand up to the heat of a fireplace. Or
what I could do to a claybody to make it withstand the heat of a fireplace.
Thanks for all and any advice.
