I am in pretty much the same position as Tom. If I had found clay 20+
years ago, I would have chosen it for my path. Now, I have a day job
that provides all the things
we struggle for, and I struggle to do both. Once I gained the smallest
degree of skill, I found a market niche planters ( the cactus and
succulent specialty nurseries). I produce maybe 75% of my volume for
them. I think of it as an apprecenticeship by marketplace. I think
forcing creativity into a limited production line is a valuable skill.
Sometimes it takes discipline and thats why I think its worthwhile.
I have just passed a major goal. I am moving into a new house where I
will have a ceramics only studio and a gas kiln. I had been bisque
firing at home and schlepping work to a craft center to be glaze fired.
Boy am I stoked.
