Hi- After getting out all of my ceramic/pottery/porcelain books, and =
going to a few museum web sites I still can't find what I am looking =
for...I have been asked to make an"Aladdin-type" oil lamp for a ceremony =
in September. It needs to be footed, and self supporting, but I can't =
seem to find a picture of anything close that I can show the buyers at =
our next meeting. (It will be lit for Dinner the 1st night, and then for =
3 other meals throughout the weekend.) I suppose it it one of those =
"I'll know it when I see it " problems. Any suggestions would be very, =
very welcome. Happy potting!-Kathleen Chase Earth-n-Fire Pottery Cape =

There was an article on these Aladdin-type lamps in an old issue of Clay
Times. As usual, I can't remember which one. I was surprised at how small
they were.

Is historical accuracy more important to your group, or visibility and
pageantry? If the latter, then go to the Disney web site and print off a
copy of the lamp. I'm sure you'll be able to find it there somewhere.

I made a lamp kind of like this by throwing a bottle, then, while it was
still wet, turning it so it sat on its side with the spout pointing at a
slightly upward angle. I smoothed and rounded the bottom, tapped a new, flat
bottom on the side where it would be needed, and cut the lid out of the
upper wall of the bottle. Mine isn't trying to look like it came from the
Middle East, but it could be done.

You could do alterations to the shape of the bottle, add little claw feet or
a thrown foot ring, add a handle--whatever you want.

I then threaded a length of glasswick (Aftosa or your local up-scale candle
shoppe) down the neck of the bottle, filled it with oil, and lit it. Works
great, but that flame is pretty vigorous, so be careful where you set it.

I have always thought that the Aladdin-type lamps looked like gravy
pitchers, or small, odd-shaped teapots. There is a picture of an aladdin
lamp on a sweatshirt on this page:
