I just got my new Ceramics Monthly. What a pleasure to read
Tom Buck's article on Behrens. Behrens was gone long before
I picked up my first piece of clay, but I used to browse through
old CM magazines in the college library, and read his pieces on
glaze work. There was no glaze instruction in my undergraduate
school, and Behrens work seemed like magic to me.
Great images in the article too - Craig
Martell's blue celedon vase is a stunner. A
great celedon, that tiny hint of frost - delicious.
Thanks, Tom, for a very interesting article.

Tony Hansen, in his site as well as in his books, warns us from
"text books". I agree with him, that just copping and collecting more and
more recipes books without understanding deeper to the substance of the
materia missing the point and making yourself a slave rather than a master
of the glazing.
Behrns mini -book is different. Why? because of two reasons, first it is
more a hints book, aseptically for the self learning person. Second as
combining with software you may renew some of the recipes there that are
using frits that are not available anymore or not available in your country
I write here names of some interesting glazes from his book. The book cost's
about 9$, a gift.
all ^6 ox.
Stony fissured glaze
you can add colorant to this one
Glaze with marking beautiful, RUNNY, can add colorants oxides in small
amounts
Stony matte you can see it in my site.
Looking again in the book, I see there are a lot of subject that in the last
time I open the book, did not interest me at all, they look like exactly
what I need now.
Book for all times!
I have the 13th print from 1997 (last century).
I send you here a test, you can try. I did it only once, on a small saucer.
Test it on different color claybody, buff or brown is the best. I will add
to my next firing on a plate as a real life test. But as we are dealing with
Behrns and I got the idea from his book I send it now.

Yes, Dannon, I was reading it last night. The tribute is very fine. and
there are examples of many types of glazes and terra sig techniques from
Berhens being used by Clayart members, Craig, Steve Branfman, Lori
Leary, Mel, and Vince. Very nice and personal tribute. Berhens had a
tremendous influence on many of us who developed our clay skills way
back when.
Great tribute to that generous and inquisitive man.
Thank you, Tom.
