West coast (particularly California) potters interested in learning about
Lowell Baker's sawdust fired kilns, which give wood firing effects with
little or no smoke, and can be fired in an urban setting, take note:
Lowell will give a six day kiln building workshop at my studio in Berkeley,
California, beginning Saturday, May 19. Lowell has designed a sawdust
injection burner that blows sawdust into a kiln after it reaches bisque
temperature fired with gas. The flow of sawdust can be controlled so that
smoke is kept to a minimum during firing.
Workshop will cover all aspects of kiln building and design, burner
fabrication, information about ITC compounds used to protect bricks and
shelves, firing schedule, and the use of flashing slips and sawdust
additives to enhance wood effects. The workshop will end with a cone 10
firing; each participant can put in a few pieces. Fee for the workshop is
$200, and there is a limit of 30 people. For information and sign-up, send
email to gary@garyholt.com or call 510-527-4183.
