I have an older 3 cu ft. size Evenheat kiln that overfired the past two =
cone 04 firings. The cones melted in the kiln setter, the setter did not =
turn itself off, and I had to manually turn off the kiln after 7-8 hours =
when it normally takes only 5-6 hours for a cone 04 firing. I bought the =
kiln used for $90 and fired it 35 times in the past year with 100% =
success. Does this sound like a simple kiln sitter repair? Or, time to buy =
a newer, more reliable one? Any advice appreciated!!!

Yes it does sound like the sitter. It might be the ceramic tube through which the control rod passes. The rod flakes off and fills the tude. See if there's a bunch of "rust" in it. Cl;ean it out and replace the rod.

Try replacing the sensing rod and the two cone holders. These can be
purchased from just about any ceramics supplier. I have on occasion pulled
the two cone holders and using a flat file, file them down until they are
smooth where the cone sits.

First, kilnwash your sitter pegs. Then RUN, don't walk,
to the store and get witness cones! And use them!
Even if the sitter is terminal (which I doubt), you
can still fire. You should use them anyway.
