That is an uplifting message for me to read, Louis. I was losing a tiny =
bit of sleep over what I am doing, (irresponislbe?)and how I am going to =
collect analysis for all my materials. Can be done, but once I get =
them, distribute them and get the calculator going, I may not have much =
time left over in the studio. I think it is all right that we each do =
what we can, like you say, and then we all have to go from there to best =
suit our abilities and hopefully needs. As we all know, there are =
terrible glaze receipes all over the place, and despite that, they are =
tried. However I think it fair to underline that any receipe posted or =
written on the bus stop, is just a receipe and does not come with any =
recommendation or guarentees. The results posted are the individual's =
results who tested them. Of course if that individual thinks they are =
"super", that again is based on the tester's perameters of what super =
means. Purely visual, surface, food safe, stable, none of the above? =
That is up to the user to decide and work on. Of course it is a gift to =
have great bases to start out with like 5x20 and the others who work =
steadfastly to develop glazes that are "super" in terms of stable and =
foodsafe glazes. Very appreciated. and I think we can all agree on =
theirn praise. But for the little test studios of single potters who =
are first looking at visual, these receipes need to be taken with a huge =
grain of experimentation and caution.
Best regards,

To add my two cents, for what they are worth, and from a person, who does
not have a glaze calculation program or the skills to use one as yet, I
think Alisa's suggestion is a very good one.
Thank you, Tom Buck. Calculation is a skill we should all learn (hope to
do so in the near future), but for those who are not versed in glaze
calculation, and who are willing to try out glaze recipes that are posted,
why should they be deprived of trying new glazes, because they have not yet
acquired this skill. As we travel the road of learning and increase our
knowledge in clay, we need to be able to experiment. We cannot learn
everything at once, and some of us are slower to learn in certain areas
than in others, just as some of us are more proficient in some areas than
in others. I think it is wonderful that there is so much sharing of glaze
recipes, testing results, and especially expertise from the experts.
Thank you all.
All the best as always.
