tile setter question

Hi guys,
Someone gave me a tile setter and I am in the process of making some 4x4x3/8
inch porcelain tiles. I will be firing these to cone 9, ox. I had visions
of the tiles sagging in the middle at that cone. Has anyone fired porcelain
tiles at cone 9 using a sitter, will they remain flat?
Thanks,
Joyce A

Joyce,
Not sure what style setters you have, do you know whether the tile
setters themselves can withstand cone 9?
For example. Laguna's 10 inch Tile rack is rated to cone 5, the 16 inch
wide rack is rated to cone 01 or below.
Sounds like you may have a different style, but I thought it worth
mentioning!
best wishes

I think you have good reason for those visions. I have had a heck of a time
with porcelain and warping- it is just not a clay that likes to stay in
shape through the fire. For one thing, it has no grog. For another, that
wonderful surface is because of how vitrified it gets, so my impression from
limited use of it is that it is pretty floppy right before it is mature in
the fire. Have you been successful getting undistorted porcelain tiles
without the setter?
Good luck to you! Marian in Michigan
