Next, I tried Frosty Crystal, provided to me by Alisa, and she got it from
Toni in S.Africa.

I added the EPK so the bentonite would have something to floculate. That's
why it totals out at 108. It came out very nicely. I may have gotten more
crystals if I hadn't dinked with it, but I'm pleased with it.

It's got lots of little blue (yes--blue--I promise I'll wash the container
next time, but it's pretty in blue), indistinct crystals. The crystals are
better inside the bowl, where the glaze is thicker. I added too much water
to this one.

There are some almost-pinholes inside the bowl, where the glaze is thickest,
but it's a crystalline glaze, not intended to be functional, so that's not a
real big problem.

Hi, Melinda.

Nice to hear from you. I'm not sure what you mean by "a good base over
colored Terra Sig". I've always left terra sig unglazed, or maybe given it a
coat of wax. I use Future acrylic floor wax (nice satin sheen) when I use
anything, but lots of people recommend Turtle Wax. I'm not sure this answers
your question. If not, let me know and I'll try again.

As for the Frosty Crystal, I think it would have been better if I'd left out
the EPK. The thing is, bentonite won't do anything if there's no clay in the
recipe. CMC will. I expect a person should just add a couple percents of
CMC. Alumina content does kill crystals.

Elizabeth will make an excellent mug exchange partner. You're a lucky girl.

So, I hope things are going well for you there. I just got back from Rapid
City. I take (don't snicker) belly dancing classes there every Monday night.
It's really a lot of fun. 'Bout time for me to get to bed, though, so I'll
say good night.

TTYL,

Cindy
I tried the Frosty under RR's version of Frit Floating blue. I had to
sub 3134 with FSB 757 ( only Ferro knows what is in there and
they are not telling )
It came out a lovely shining BLACK with blue crystals all over.
Definitely alchemy!

Hi Cindy....do you think that the frosty crystal is a good glaze, all in
all.?...I don't use many, and sometimes, believe it or not, and I don't know
why, some of the glazes at ^5/6 will work for me at lower temps...I finally
just quit trying to get pretty things to come out, and went back to raku,
because I have to start selling some work, and that will do it..., so have
been on a raku marathon this last weekend....pretty results....especially
with my local clay, which seems to take the shock better than any that I
imported.....went to the mica mountain, and got a bunch, and am going to try
firing just in a bonfire situation, ground it up in a corn grinder and mixed
it with some clay....as they say it will stand up to such extreme
firing...we will see, as my students and I made some test pieces to try
thursday...mica clay is so satiny feeling....anyway, as far as a good base
over colored terra sigs, is yours a good one? I got E. Priddy as a mug
exchange partner, but haven't sent mine yet....hi from Guatemala, Melinda
