Dear Howard,
Thank you for making this comment about the direct comparison between =
the nature of glaze raw materials and those constructed from mixtures of =
elemental oxides.
oxides based upon an analysis of the same recipe. The eye does not lie, =
they ain't the same guy. In fact, in this case, the recipe looks =
better.>
It is this sort of evidence which refutes the supposition that the =
material function of elemental oxides is essential to the melting of a =
glaze. To infer that elemental oxides cause melting, based on a =
knowledge of oxide content at an Equilibrium Eutectic Point is =
incorrest.
It is time more people realised that using elemental oxide =
nomenculature, e.g Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O for Kaolin rather than =
Al4(Si4O10)(OH)8, may be a convenient way of manipulating numbers for =
comparison or to ensure that a glaze conforms to specific requirements =
but it tells little about the material attributes of the stuff we have =
to deal with.
Best regards,
Ivor.
