Dear Clayarters,

Back in the late 60's and 70's I used APGreen Fireclay straight for
throwing. Well aged, I could throw it fairly well with almost dry fingers.
Many of my potter friends thought I was nuts, but several of us used it,
especially Floy Shaffer of Bowling Green. She threw huge pots with it for
smoke firing. It made terrific ovenware for me and had very few faults
until all of a sudden I was getting shipments of it with lime particles. At
that time studio potters were only a small part of their business so they
would not correct the problem. So had to change to another clay body. I'll
bet some of the old timers will remember this problem.

I also tried to find clays that had little or no sulfur fuming during the
firing. So avoided Goldart and substituted Jordan clay in my recipe. I
fired electric. Sulfur fuming in a gas kiln was not a problem.

Regards, Bonnie Staffel of Charlevoix, MI.
