Dear ClayArters,
I would like to invite those of you with international experience and/or
interests in traditional pottery to a topical discussion group at NCECA next
Friday afternoon at 3:30. The group is titled "Experiencing Tradition:
American Potters Abroad", and is intended to explore our encounters with and
impact on traditional pottery communities worldwide. By 'traditional' I
generally mean minimal technology, limited use of glaze, rural and/or
subsistence lifestyles in developing countries, and ways of making pots that
are disappearing under the weight of global trade and information exchange.
Many of us have lived and worked in these kinds of communities to better
understand the roles of pots and potters, and as both teachers and learners
have sought ways to assist in documenting, developing, and maintaining these
traditions. I welcome your input, and hope you can attend on Friday 3/30 to
share your experiences and insights. If you have any questions, please
respond OFF THE LIST to : pfay@fgcu.edu
See you at NCECA,
Tricia Fay
