last update before 2nd annual clayart slide show

updated mon 26 mar 01

It's me again! This is the last update before NCECA. I Fly tomorrow and
don't know if I'll have access to my mail.

Polly Beach, editor of Clay Times has offered her expertise as a publisher.

And we're still looking for a local professional Craft Photographer.

There seems to be some confusion about the sign-up. I'm only asking people
to send me mail so that I can guage the attendence.

Wednesday and Thursday, during NCECA, bring your labled slides to the
Clayart room and give them to Joyce or mel. Then turn up at the workshop.

If you have equipment to donate, make sure it's got your name on it and give
it to Joyce or mel in the Clayart Room as early as possible before the
workshop.

The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, evening, March 29 at 8:00 pm in the
Clayart room, suite 621 at the Omni. The room isn't quite as big as we'd
hoped but it's a bit bigger than last year. We'll try to get in as many as
we can.

Those who haven't turned in their slides early bring them to the Clayart
Room at 6:30 pm on the night of the workshop. It's better to turn them in
EARLIER. Remember to label them as as described below.

Slide Wranglers and Setter-Uppers should show up at 6:30.

I've listed the participants so far below. If you want to participate but
haven't sent your name yet, see me at NCECA or get your slides to Joyce or
mel
in the Clayart Room. By the way, you don't have to have slides to
participate.

Regarding labeling, let's take Richard's suggestion and use the NAIA
standard. "More and more of the shows seem to be going to the NAIA standard,
in which a red dot is at the bottom left of the slide, your slide number is
on the bottom right, your medium in between the two, and your name is on the
top." The position of the red dot in the lower left means that when the
slide is put in the projector to be shown (upside down) the red dot is
visible in the tray. It would probably also be better if people put their
name and address directly on the slide mount and didn't use labels.

Once NCECA has started, look for updates on the Clayart notice board in the
Clayart room (usually on the door).

The Original Posting Is Below:

Here we go again. This was such a popular event last time. We had so many
people wanting to participate that we couldn't get them all into the Clayart
Suite. I think this is one of the reasons they were determined to get a
bigger suite this year.

Basically, the idea is to run it like a jury slide viewing to give people
the experience of seeing their slides in a jurying situation so they could
see what the jury sees when they review slides. It would also be an
opportunity to see your slides, objectivly in relationship to the others and
how they might appear to a jury and pick up some tips. Of course, it's also
an opportunity to see more of the work of our fellow Clayarters as well.

People should bring their 3 best slides (or worst, like Paul), we load them
up in the trays and run them, each slide gets a few seconds, no comments,
just run through them, 1,2,3. Then, if anybody has a comment they could make
it before the next set.

Last year we had lots of "experts" volunteering. Ruth Butler from Ceramics
Monthly, Azad, a local Denver Craft photographer, John
Hesselberth, who wrote a good article on photographing pots, lots of folks
with jury experience and even Paul Lewing with his "3 worst slides he could
possibly imagine". There was a lot of great participation.

If you want to participate, volunteer or loan equipment:
- Send an OFF LIST email to Russel.Fouts@skynet.be Put "Clayart Slide
Workshop Participant" in the subject.
- If you want to show slides, label your slides with your NAME and ADDRESS
and Put a red dot in the BOTTOM LEFT CORNER (when the picture is right-side
up).
- Please have the slides in a protective cover/container of some kind and
label the cover/container as well.
- No glass mounted slides please (am I the only one who still has some of
these?)
- You are welcome to participate even if you don't have slides. Just let us
know so we have an idea of how many people we have to set up for.
- We'll need volunteers to "wrangle" slides, donate projectors, carousels, a
big screen, help set up the projectors, the room and reset afterwords.
- Please let me know if I've forgotten anything.
- We'd like to limit this to Clayarters (active and lurkers, alike).
Otherwise, it's just going to get too big.

There are several of things I'd like to handle better this year. I'd like to
make sure that we get the slides of all the people who want to show. That
all the slides get shown and that all the slides get back to the rightful
owner. Out of all the people that submitted slides, a couple didn't get
their slides shown and I think one didn't get her slides back.

- Collecting of slides. I think the Clayart room is the best location for
this but nobody should have to spend all of NCECA in the Clayart Suite
collecting slides (unless they were planning to spend the whole of the
conference there anyway). Maybe we could have a rotation of volunteers.

- Slide "Wranglers". Volunteers to load the slide trays and make sure that
the slides get back into their rightful containers afterwards.

- Some way to make sure that, if people can't pick up their slides after the
show, there is someone to give them back to them afterwards.

If any body knows of a local professional craft photographer who would like
to volunteer, please let us know. Craft magazine and book publishers are
also welcome.

We will let you know the date as we get closer. It sort of depends which
evening event Clayarters are most willing to miss. The night of the dance is
definately out. Mishy would never forgive me. ;-)

All of this will be refined as we go along.

OK, let's hear from you!
