Good evening Janet (I hope),

I am hoping that this is the correct email address. Anywho, I am writing to
ask if you might know of a place on the web - or anywhere else - where one
might find the personal mark used to impress potteries to indicate production
by Michael Leach. I ask as I have found a piece that has an impressed square
mark with a large 'L' and an 'm' inside the dimensions of the 'L'. I cannot
find the mark anywhere, but it is a type of pottery that might have been
produced by a person that had studied at St. Ives, or with Bernard Leach.

I dislike to presume upon a person, but I am at wits end as far as sources.
I found you on the web and thought perhaps you might be able to help.

Thank you in advance for your time, trouble and consideration of this e-mail.

Best regards,

R. David Saunders

Dear David,

I have two Michael Leach pots that I bought at his pottery about 30 years
ago. The mark on the bottom is a circle surrounding a capital Y. These
were pretty ordinary flower pots (all I could afford at the time) and he may
have used different marks on more imposing pots.

Hope this helps.

Dear David

Welcome to "clay art" as we call this discussion list.

As far as I know, there is no web site with marks or
seals of makers in the UK. However, all is not lost. If
it is a contemporary/living British potter, the mark
should be in "British Studio Potters' Marks" compiled
by Eric Yates-Owen and Robert Fournier (published 1999
or 2000, but sorry do not know the publisher or ISBN)

Without seeing the mark, it is difficult to tell - not
that I am an expert. Could you possibly make a drawing
or scan it, then send it to me (not the list) as a
jpeg?

I am not familiar with LM mark you
describe, but both Bernard and David Leach use/d a
similar mark with the B (or D) within the L, sometimes
with two dots added. Both use/d several different marks
on the same theme. The St. Ives pottery mark was added
to all work made there. All the Leach family (including
Janet Leach) as well as the countless helpers and
apprentices used it alongside personal seals. Once
again it went through a series of transformations but
looks like a sort of S with a bar through the middle
and a dot above and below the bar.

I should imagine that if you think your pot was made at
the St. Ives workshop, it would have that mark, even if
it had no other/s.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help... Maybe someone
else on clay art will be able to help you.

Best wishes
