my first glaze tests

I have spent more time researching, reading, and talking to people for =
advice so far than I have on actually testing glazes. But yesterday I =
fired my first kiln-load with something other than 20x5 in it.

First, I have a special thank-you to Tom Buck, who gave me the =
confidence to go ahead and take the plunge. Tom has spent a lot of his =
time (and patience, I think) giving me a lot of other help and advice, =
explained how to properly mix a glaze, work out the weight of a glaze =
slurry, and firing help. Thanks Tom, for all your help and =
encouragement. I can honestly say I couldn't have gotten started on =
this venture without you.

Thanks also to everyone else that has posted detailed glaze tests. =
Those have given me encouragement and starting points.

I had a couple of weird glaze results, like a floating blue that is =
floating brown with no hint of blue or green anywhere at all. Hmmm. A =
nice pot with a commercial glaze combination that I've used successfully =
before than ran like heck all over my kiln shelf this time! Not =
impressed - I've never had glaze on my kiln shelves before. Even with =
kiln wash on the shelves, it does not just chip off.

I tested using 6 different Tucker's clay bodies. The nicest results =
were on Tucker's CCSS and Tucker's Mid Smooth Stoneware. Very different =
results, but very nice.

I'll post some test details in my next message.
