I've experienced THREE "malfunctioning" pyrometers in the last year. My
previous meter lasted for nearly 200 firings. Yea I know I was lucky.
OK I know a little about electricity. I don't put a fork in my toaster.
I hire someone else to rewire anything I can't unplug. I don't stand in
water and flip on lights or operate power tools, hey I even know to clip back
my waist length hair before using drills and saws.
One of the times one of my new pyrometer mal functioned a friend dropped
by and pointed out that one of the wires in the back had bent and was
touching another piece of metal. Messed up the electrical circuit? New info
to me. Last night was pyrometer skipping out hell again. I checked for bent
wires and checked to make sure the unit wasn't touching the metal kiln shed
and still had problems This morning I noticed the aluminum foil I've wrapped
my kiln in was loose around the port where the probe sits.
1. Could this aluminum foil have fouled up the meter?
2. Could touching metal at any time damage the meter?
3. Since many kilns have metal casing and nearby building materials are
usually metal around kilns why hasn't anyone told me about this before?
As it is I was fired without slowly but was so stressed and tired that I
canceled a dancing date. Come on folks this is serious.
Joy more eager to see my scrap glaze tests than the pottery. Isn't that
silly?
