Kim,
I really don't know, since my base glaze does contain Zn. Maybe, someone
else on ClayArt has the answer to this one. My glaze contains a lot of
calcium in the form of wollastonite. I know that zinc affects some greens,
but I am in the dark with regard to the Degussa cadmium encapsulated reds.
Here I would do a line blend:
Make up 2- 100 g sample of your base glaze, one with 10% stain and one
with none (this will only require 10 grams [there are approx. 452 g/#, so if
you bought a quarter lb., you are using less than a tenth of what you have]).
Make the volumetric dilutions to obtain, say, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%. Paint on
or dip small test tiles and fire to your cone. (BTW, I fire to ^8 or ^9
oxidation.) This will give you the information that you want regarding both
the intensity and effect of Zn on the Degussa stain in your glaze, and hens
the compatibility with your base glaze.
Good luck, and maybe you could let us know what happens!
My best,

cerdec doesnt seem to suggest that the zinc has an effect. perhaps if the
stain is truely encapsulated in zircon before and after the firing then
these other chemicals issues hold less issue
