Llewellyn -
There are no absolutes in clay, but in my experience, kerosene is NEVER
called for in a hot wax mix, and lamp oil would be almost as dangerous. Not
only would they both create toxic fumes, they would also become extreme
volatile and would drastically increase the chances of a studio fire.
Almost all studio fires are caused either by faulty kiln installation, or by
hot wax setups.

Use mineral oil, vegetable oil, or petroleum jelly. They will give you a
smooth, brushable mixture. And do not heat your wax pot hotter than 300F.
Best wishes -

Has anyone tried using Lamp oil in a hot wax mix where Kerosene is called
for? Would this make a suitable substitute (both petroleum based?)
providing of course the usual flame and heat precautions where any
flammables are being heated.?

Beeswax and vegetable oil work well, 50/50, as wax resist. Perhaps it would
be OK for the use under discussion as well.

Yes people have used lamp oil, whatever that is. I worry that it may not have a
defined flash point and someone using it will get in trouble with the
substitution. Wax pan fires are rough. ABC fire extinguishers spray wax, hot, all
over the place. I am not sure what usual means.

Yes, use parafinic lamp oil - clear and should have no smell. I also add
unsented baby oil. MarjB

It used to be whale oil.
I hope no one on the list uses such a product now.
