solar lighting components

I am looking for a supplier of photovoltaic componenets that can be used in
constructing standalone exterior lighting. I can see replacing the lights
at my gate, with something more aesthetically pleasing stoneware "lantern"
and cutting down on electic usage at the same time. Solar panels that are
"added on" look crappy, but if designed into a fixture could be attractive.
If successful, I think that the product would sell.

I view this as an exercies in the application of solid design principles to
the discussion of form and glaze that Clayart has been having.

Requirements are:

Small Photovoltaic panel with polymer cover for weather protection.
Small rechargable batteries for storage.
Controller to allow battery charging during the day and battery use at night.
Appropriate light fixture base and "bulb".

Has anyone tried to do this? Does anyone know of a component supplier?

If anyone else is interested, I would love to correspond directly.

Hi Wes

You were requesting solar lighting components. I too was interested in
installing solar lighting and a solar fountain at our place. We are "off
grid" so there are no other options.

There are several companies that make solar lighing. Here are a few links
where you can purchase components or pre-made lighting. I also included a
site that provides information on sustainable energy in general to provide
you with the basics.

I would be happy to discuss this project further off line, perhaps it
would motivate me to get started on designing some outdoor lighting myself.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the pointer to Mr. Solar. Yucca Valley should get a lot of sun.
I drove 58 from Barstow to I-5 last month and there were a lot of solar
fields to be seen. Are you using anthing, or just thinking abou it?

Have you looked at Real Goods (www.realgoods.com)?

They have been in the solar/alternative energy business for about 20
years and have developed a lot of products that are aimed at making
solar energy more readily available to the general public.

If they don't have exactly what you're looking for, the people there
are very knowledgeable and friendly and will help you put together
what you need.

Hi Solar Lovers!

There is an interesting website, www.mrsolar.com, which is maintained by a
solar engineer, who teaches solar energy design at a college in Arizona. His
approach is to provide visitors with easy to understand terminology, and to
refer solar and wind-power customers to sellers of such products.

He writes a newsletter (about twice a year, sometimes more, sometimes less),
which describes the latest technology, in very simple, easy to understand
terms. I just received the latest edition, which is about all one wants to
know about wind power, the equipment needed for a household setup, etc.

I recommend this website: www.MrSolar.com

Best wishes!

Wes,

You may be able to locate some local distributors. I was surprised to find
out about two Arkansas solar dealers, listed below:

http://www.rockygrove.com/
http://www.stellarsun.com

By the way, I wonder if anyone is using solar cells to generate electricity
to fire their kilns? Is it a feasible idea?

Good luck,

Hi Everybody!

I suggest that you run, don't walk--to your local newsstand, and pick up the
latest issue of Mother Earth Magazine. Most of this issue is dedicated to
solar power for homes and small businesses.

Best wishes!
