At Paragon, we always have kilns in our "scratch and dent" section.
We sell them at excellent prices. However, we prefer that you see
the kiln before buying. If you are in the Dallas area, stop by
Paragon. The selection changes constantly.

I look forward to meeting you.

Hey, you guys, Canada is a bi-i-i-ig country! Exactly WHERE in Canada are
you looking for a used kiln? Half of the U.S. is closer to me than a lot of
Canada, so please be more specific. Also, what is it you're looking for?
What cone capabilities, what price range, what size?

Well I'm about half way up Lake Huron in a small town called Kincardine,
Ontario.
I'm not sure what I need in a kiln as I'm a a Oh! Gosh! scuffle scuffle,
Ahem! I'm a newbie and don't know what I'm doing and so far am just Oh Gosh!
guys so far I'm just playing....but I am finding I'm turning out to be more
sculpture than a potter (if there is a difference) besides that I haven't
been able to make a decent bowl or mug, or pot, yet....but I can make a
fabulous rose, or a peony I love 3 dimensional art. Having painted for
years and years I can't tell you the excitement I feel at bringing art to a
3 dimensional form.
I only just found out what a cone was yesterday and I think I would need a
biggish one as my paintings are usually quite large and I would probably go
the same way with a kiln.
hanks,
Aley

Working large in clay is a major technical issue in itself.
(I consider some of my work large - up to 7 feet high.)
Fortunately, there's an easy solution, both to the issue of
construction, and the issue of kiln size...build in sections!
You don't have to have a kiln as large as the finished work,
and if you only build each section as large as your kiln
allows, the structural concerns are greatly minimized.

Sure, a large kiln is nice, (and I'd love to have one too,)
but they're seldom cheap, and harder to find second-hand.
And, with a smaller kiln you don't have to feel wasteful
if you need to fire a small load now and then.

My point is, don't feel that your work has to be made to
the size of your kiln. There are many different ways to make
large work from small kilns, and I'd be happy to tell you a
few of them.

Buy what you can comfortably afford and install. Then, when
you are more matured in your work, you will have a better
idea of what you require in a kiln.

Different types of kilns are good for different kinds of
work; there's not one 'best' sort to get. Size is only one
consideration. Fuel is another - do you want oxidation or
reduction? (Fuel or electric?) A 'special-effects' kiln like
salt or wood-fire? Then there's your choice of temperature.

You shouldn't decide that now; try different techniques;
wait and see what will suit your work best. If you can't
rent or borrow kiln space 'til then, and you must buy your
own kiln now, keep the investment minimal. Later on, when
you learn more about the requirements of your chosen work,
you can make a better-informed choice.

I think the one thing that is the most fun about all this is how much I
have to stretch my mind past the little vision of what my uneducated mind
can image.
I'm still laughing at myself, at my vision of BIG. I have to say it does
not include a 7ft piece Maybe 2 ft but 7 ft wow!!!!!
I can't even begin to take in the dynamics of that.
I have hopefully found a smaller second hand kiln at a good price very near
to my home and what is even more exciting LESSONS Soon I will be able to
make throw a pot. (I hope)
Aley laughing at the learning curve when she should be thinking of a little
old ladies retreat :)))))))))))
Snail can I get back to you when I know a little more please. :)
