Thanks Alisa for keeping my question in mind. You just reminded me to thank
everyone for their responses about my 1 ton of A.P. Green Silica Cement.
Thank you everyone, I had some really great suggestions like getting it
tested at Alfred. I had no idea what other kinds of things they tested
there beside JH and RR's leaching tests.

>In a description by Richard Behrens of "using cement in glazes" he

Are you reading Ceramic Glazemaking? I think I have this book somewhere, I
will go try and find it. You definitely have my curiosity up.

>I do not know if they are usuable witht the material
>you have, as Behrens used Portland Cement, but that is builidng cement and
>maybe what you have is also?

This is a good question. And I find it very intriguing. The engineer at
A.P. Green about hit the roof when I told him I might try and make something
with it, he told me if I ruined my kiln he wasn't going to pay for it. I
suspect that it is mortar for a glass furnace. (I was really hoping to use
this stuff when I build my kiln, though I hope I don't require of ton of
mortar.)

Can someone tell me more about what kind of temperatures a glass kiln might
have? I also think this silica cement, if it is mortar, might require heat
to "cure" properly. The guy who gave it to me tried to pour a patio and it
cracked badly. Can you believe he had MORE than 1 ton of this stuff?

>He says in a properly compounded glaze, the cement behaves like a frit,
>natural or manufactured. Looking at the unity formula of cement, it is
>apparent that it a basically a high calcium, low silica frit. Uusally it
>also a high alumina type frit. I thought this informaton was interseting.

I would be willing to GIVE someone some of this stuff, if they would like to
try it. You can come pick up or I will mail to you. Now this stuff I am
sure will travel well!

Sincerely,
