Batts: "It is possible to make your own shelves from a stiff mixture of
equal parts of fireclay and medium-coarse grog which is then packed very
densely into a mould with a mallet. When dry, they need to be fired to at
least cone 11, using placing sand as a separating agent to prevent sticking.
However, they will never be as strong as industrially-manufactured ones of
similar thickness." p 78
Kiln Props: "Some potters make their own props from a heavily grogged clay
such as Potclays Crank which is rolled into cylinders and fired to high
stoneware. p 79.
