I appreciate David's nice comments. I was at NCECA and am sorry I
missed him.
Is lid insulation important to anyone else on Clayart? We didn't
include extra lid insulation on the NCECA kiln because we were
concerned that it would raise the price too high.
With best wishes,

It isnt so much the actual cost of the insulation disk, it is the cost of re
engineering the lite lid (spring counter balanced lid) assembly and the
associated anchoring system. Insulation that is designed to go over 2350 F
and maintain its structure is not cheap. We would prefer to go with a two
tier brick and insualtion composite which would be more structurally sound,
and provide the added insulating factor.
All things considered, this would indeed raise the price about another 10%,
and the Viking II isnt exactly an inexpensive kiln to begin with.
If you would like to discuss the matter further, you may do so either on
Clayart or to me personally. While we at Paragon are commited to making the
best kiln in the industry, we are also sensitive to not offending anyone with
spam on this forum.

Mr Curt Rothman...I currently have four paragon kilns at my home.. and
another four at school. Thru the years, goin back to the fifties, Paragon
is the only kiln i have ever had! .. For some reason i dont recognize a
question about lid insulation as SPAM.............. and i doubt that many
other Clayarters will recognize it either.. but i do recognize double talk
when i see it.. Thanks Jim in Denton.

An easy way to add extra insulation on the lid is to cut a piece of ceramic
fiber blanket, 1" thick seems fine to fit the exterior profile of the lid.
Then cut a piece of 1/2" thick ceramic fiberboard to go on top of the fiber
blanket to make a sandwich.
Then have a sheet metal shop make a metal cover for this "sandwich" that not
only follows the outside profile of the lid but has tabs that extend down
onto the sheet metal band that contains the existing lid. Secure with self
tapping sheet metal screws.
Works like a dream, and is light weight.
