webspace as storage option?

updated mon 9 apr 01

Well, it had to happen... A hard drive full and nowhere
to store images, etc. (I cannot deal with 999 floppies,
nor can I afford other drives, CD-writers, etc. just
now).

So my question is:

Has anyone used their webspace as storage space? Apart
from the ISP deleting or loosing the lot, are there any
drawbacks? Since finding someone's personal address
book and diary on-line when searching for a friend (by
name)!?!? I only want to save images (JPEG's) not files
or other sensitive data.

Does anyone know if they will suffer from being up &
down-loaded? I seem to remember someone saying Jpeg's
are "lossey", so would they deteriorate each time they
are transferred? Any drawbacks to take into
consideration?

Without being embedded in a web site, would they be
accessible to others?

Thanks for any help... I have about 2 bytes free after
deleting as much as I can!

I own an ISP in Central PA.

We have a few customers who uses their accounts as a storage area.

You really want to save the image as high resolution images, but they can be
large, so transferring them on a dial-up connection would take at long time
to download.

The files are read only, they do not deteriorate. "loosey", means that the
color is loosey when you convert to jpeg.

The way I setup accounts, The root login area is private, ie. not accessable
via the web. Each account has an html directory that is web accessible. You
will want to see how the ISP is setup they may give you space that is not
web accessible so that you can keep files that you do not want the world to
see.

Your best bet for storage is still a CD Writer.

The costs for web hosting/storage will be around $19 to $25 per month. You
can find CD Writers for less than $200 and CD-Rs can be found for $0.25 a
piece. But, Web Server storage will cost you more in the long run

Many thanks for the many really kind offers of burning
CDs of posted images for me. You are most generous
folk - as ever!

Following the advice of several Clay Arters, I have
decided to upload to some free webspace I have
associated with the four websites I "caretake" plus the
15 MB unused web space Eckhard has. This should provide
quite enough space and I already have 273 MB hard-disk
free this evening after zipping a couple of nights
away.

That is the good news.

The bad news is that in my panic, I must have deleted
the current version of The CoA website!! Came to add
the names of recent Path Makers today, only to find I
only have a copy of the January version! Three months
of updating and redesign work lost... I could cry!

In fact I did blubber over my otherwise stoic stiff
upper lip... You know how it feels when you are
struggling along, only just making life work and then
suddenly some dumb mistake just tips the balance? The
proverbial straw? From shoulder shrugging acceptance of
your lot in life, you descend into total despair? Well,
that is me just now.

So in the light of this little debacle... Thank you for
all the good advice about buying new equipment. I do
not want to sound ungracious or ungrateful, but as I
said in my original post we CANNOT AFFORD any new
hardware, so even if it only costs a $1.99 it is not an
option. When it costs $100 per day to run an Art
Centre, but sales are a couple of cards all week, it
does not take an Einstein to work out that a budget is
less than non-existent just now... More immediate and
important things like food and paying mortgage,
utilities, etc. take a priority at times like these.

The Easter week will make or break many small & micro
businesses throughout the UK, now we are just one big
theme park and no longer a real manufacturing economy.
£250 million (US$400 million ?) per week is currently
being "lost" to rural communities and even the towns
and cities such as York are apparently being affected.
What a year...

Sorry to moan, but life can be a real bitch. OMG a
sexist expression. Well, tough... I am dog tired and
could not care a monkey if it is not PC.

One of the best archival options is a CD/ROM writer. You can get many images on one CD-R (650MB.) This is the way I'll do it
until affordable DVD writers are available.
