I just visited a friends kiln which she had replaced the firebox and floor
with ZEDMARK HD brick. This brand of brick has functioned very well in salt
kilns in the past in fact she had 5 years of firing on this same brick with
no real damage. This time on the first firing of the new brick resulted in
the target brick swelling, collapsing and foaming like ginger bread spitting
black specks all over the kiln and wares. The kiln furniture actually sunk
about 1/4 inch into the floor brick. Beware do not use this new brick in
salt kilns. Also the walls of her kiln went from having a wonderful reddish
runny residual glaze surface to a deep black color. Any ideas on why a good
brick can go so wrong so quickly to a foaming mess? Any information would be
appreciated. Thanks Tracy
