I want to thank many of you for the very insightful posts on this =
thread lately...Some of you must be getting softHEHEHE
I especially enjoyed the link to the suiseki site...Now I know why =
my car's tires are always ready to pop when I get back from my driving =
vacations....Leave it to the Japanese to turn my little obsession into a =
science and an art....If you read what you can(the Rules) at the sites =
there is much about form judgment....
This thread has led me on an odessy which touched on the humanists =
and ended as everything always does in yet another perusal of "Zen and =
the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"....."Quality is Tao" -Robert =
Persig.......That book tied all the loose ends of my life into one =
strong cable....("Zen and the Art of Pottery" and "Val's Handbook" makes =
3)
My conclusions regarding quantifying quality of form remain pretty =
much the same since kindergarten;....We all know good form instinctively =
and we all temper our opinion through personal experience....The only =
real attempts at concretely identifying "good" were PT 's comments on =
the golden mean and my own comment about timelessness.....The ancient =
Greeks have contributed much to modern life and I'm sure there is =
something to the application of the golden mean, but its "rule" like =
those of suiseki is fraught with exception(such as Paul's comment about =
an out of balance piece being balanced by its =
environment)...Timelessness is something that can only be surely =
bestowed on a piece by much time, and as such it would not be much help =
in the judgment of a new piece...although a relationship to classic form =
could be perceived(Greeks again?)
Many may think this whole thread has been pointless, but even if the =
journey ended back where it started, it was and is valuable to me....I =
now have much steel added to my resolve on this subject....I will be =
even more bullheaded (if THATS possible) the next time someone tries to =
tell me how lacking are my forms....All are welcome to test me. Proceed =
immediately to my websites and fire off all manner of caustic comment on =
formHEHEHEHE
If any of you have more to add I am still interested and I don't =
believe we will ever fully understand, so there is much more to be said =
and much to learn even if what we learn is what we already know
"Never mistake the end of your finger for the moon when pointing at the =
moon" -don't know who said it first

"I only indulge when I've seen a snake, so I keep a supply of =
indulgences and snakes handy"
