Several years ago friends and I made a portable LPG up draft salt kiln. We took two old round 3 ring electric kilns, tore out the elements, enlarged groves of good brick, and re-assembled to make four rings.

Then with an inner form made from an the plastic side wall of an old above ground swimming pool and several cardboard disks, we cast a 2" inner wall out of insulating castable in each ring.

Also cast a new floor on top of old floor, which was placed on a one inch disk made of wire mesh and concrete. The floor was raised up on 6 or 8, 4" concrete block.

A domed lid, 3" thick, was made from the same castable. 3" spy/salting ports were cut into opposite sides of each ring. Plugs were made w/ castable poured into medium sized soft drink cups.

Inside of kiln was painted w/ aluminum hydrate.

Firings took about 8-10 hours, saltings were done w/ sodium citrate dissolved in water & sprayed into kiln.

What an interesting project, Logan. How many times
were you able to fire it before significant damage
appeared? Or is it still going?
