insulation under a kiln

Lisa,

I placed my kiln on two layers of brick. The first was hard brick and the
top layer was insulating brick with a few firebrick for support. I wouldn't
have used fiber just because of the weight that would be on it.

Those at NCECA might have noticed that on the huge oval Skutt that was in
their booth a piece of refractory board cut to fit inside the kiln resting
on the floor. Holes were neatly punched to accommodate the furniture as well
as a few hole for the venting system. Their thick fiber lid is a great
innovation.

This seems to be quite logical. I would not put any insulation board between
the underside of the floor and the kiln stand. The board just cannot support
the weight of the kiln. Put it inside. Refractory board is available from
many suppliers in various temperature ratings and thicknesses.

A layer of ceramic fiber =can also be used in this fashion inside the kiln.

Linda's kiln retrofit with ceramic fiber between the steel case and the IFB
is a great one and some might remember Crusader kilns which had a layer of
fiber in such a way.

Many of the newer electric kilns are being made with 3" IFB and will provide
a better degree of insulation.

Its important that we take the necessary steps to insure that we can get the
most value per BTU of heat in our kilns. Mel's work with ITC and fiber also
works well.

Let's all not only conserve electricity in the best way we can but do it in
as safe a way as possible
