Dear Tom,
How pleasing to hear from you again.=20
You are tying to get me into deep mire with this question.
First of all, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Yes, I throw =
slabs, but not on the wheel. I presume you mean directly onto the flat =
bench so that the clay stretches out. Yes, I roll slabs as well. But I =
have never noticed sever cracking that has persisted into the fired =
ware. Sometimes some splitting at the edges which had fracture surfaces =
indicating some sort of brittle fracture.
I would be loath to make any comment about orientation. I have great =
misgivings about that model of clay which imagines hexagonal flat =
crystals sliding past each other, lubricated by water. Moreover, it =
ignores flock structure as well as density/volume relationships. I think =
it is impossible.=20
By the way, I didn't ask a question. I put out a request for samples of =
clay which are known to give "S" cracks. I have an tentative answer but =
I need to do some practical investigations to find evidence in support.
Best regards,
Ivor.
