When researching the sources and usages of yellow iron oxide/ochre
several years ago, I found that basically yellow ochre is sold as either
yellow ochre or YIO and that it is a natural hydrated iron oxide mixed
in with some clay and limestone. Hamers' describe it as a "soft crumbly
variety of iron ore" and refers the reader to Limonite.

My experience was different than the ones mentioned until now. I've used
the two interchangeably and have found no significant difference in the
appearance of the glazes in which they were used. When I spoke with
Seattle Pottery Supply and Aardvark in 1996, they both indicated that
the two seemed to have the same effect in glaze appearance... I
emphasize "appearance" because I have no idea now.... and certainly
didn't in '96 ... how the chemical composition of the glaze is affected.
