Hi all,
I just got the email 4th request like this in a few weeks:
someone doing a school report on potters or Vermont potters
emails me and asks for info about me. Can this be any kind of
scam? Maybe I'm paranoid, but how did they get my email address
without seeing my web site first? It has a lot of info on me.
Are there that many teachers out there asking students to
research potters?
Just wondering if anyone else is getting these requests....
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer..
Yes I got that message too.. But funny thing the
e-mail return wasn't real looking it was "user"
@something erother.com or net or something... I
deleted it .. then two days later I got the same one
with a name... I asked where they got my e-mail and
they replied that they got it from my web page ..
Baffled because I have just recently changed my e-mail
for my web page, and it wasn't sent to the new
e-mail.. I wrote back if you saw my web page there is
all I am willing to divulge on "the clay and I" page
... and if you would like something specific clarified
=66rom that feel free to write... But the original
e-mail wanted to know about kids and childhood....
Sorry Charlie that is not even freely distributed to
my friends....
I would say there is something fishy there.... What I
am not sure but something ...

This sort of thing happens to me all the time, folks will do a search on =
the
pottery subject they are interested in and either a Clayart message or a
posting to a newsgroup will come up in the search along with my email
address.
Of course there are bots out there that will subscribe themselves to a li=
st
like this just to get addresses, this can generate a lot of spam

Anji and Jennifer--
You probably already know this, but by replying to a suspicious email you
are confirming for the sender that the email address they used is active.=
If
the sender is a spammer, then watch the floodgates of spam open to your
computer! I overlooked this fact and replied to the first two spams when =
I
started with my ISP to tell them to remove me from their lists and I
suddenly was getting hundreds of spams--they knew they had a good
address....Another trick they use is to say you've been automatically add=
ed
to their email list and to remove yourself, reply to their address. This
hooks you into confirming for them that they have a good address. You can=
't
be "automatically subscribed" to a legitimate list server...you have to
instigate the request yourself for real lists.
Cheers!

You probably know this already too but just by posting to this list your
email address is out there in a couple of archives and is harvested by
"bot" programs run by spammers. Then they put out CDs with 9 million emai=
l
addresses and you are on it. Spammers buy this and there you go.
I have been on ClayArt for 7 or 8 years and my public email address is we=
ll
known to the spammers since I get 5 to 10 spam messages a day.
I use the filters in Eudora to eliminate most of it. Any message, for
example, that has an exclamation mark in the subject line goes straight
into the trash. ( I usually do a guick scan of the trash before I empty i=
t
to get the occasional good message in there).
My wife is a good filter too. She is using the computer most of the day
doing newsletters for 4 or 5 organizations she belongs to. She trashes al=
l
the nasty stuff before I see it.
