I'm a college student in the chicagoland area intrested in breaking into =
the ceramics scene in the chicagoland area.
any information concering events in my area would be helpful. I do know =
personally 3 (some of minor note in the field apperently) potters in my a=
rea, but haven't approached them yet to ask what they know and or can hel=
p me with.
Unfortunately while my school is great for Education students, its cerami=
cs program stinks. Though a recently retired professor was a potter and =
the school does have a decent (even if aged and worn) selection of equipm=
ent, since his retirement the program went straight downhill. (his replac=
ements speciality is Batik, and while very good, he is not a potter in an=
y way.) But I do experience a great deal of creative freedom in explorin=
g ceramics as a medium, So that has some benefit. And i still enjoy gett=
ing myself horriblely messy in the studio. (it's my curse i think to nev=
er leave a studio with some clay in my hair and clothes.)
I am also working to develop my own personal studio at this time, so if y=
ou have any old/retired/unused equipment you might be willing to part wit=
h. please let me know, in addition to how many first-born children i'll =
have to hand over for it. (I'm in college what else do i have to barter w=
ith? unwashed socks cause i didn't have to money to do too much laundry d=
uring the school year? hehehe) but really, I am technically inclined so e=
quipment needing repair is no problem, assuming i can locate replacement =
parts... Any other studiowares too. I'm right outside the city of chica=
go itself proper (read: near west suburbs) so if your looking to hire an =
assistant for the summer... I'm open to negotiate.

Hi Philroi:
I read you plea for assistance and ceramic fellowship on the Clay Art net=

You really should plan a trip to see Mel Jacobson our net manager. He is=
not
far from you.
For the past two years I have been visiting in Schaumburg, near Chicago. =
I
am a Professor Emeritus and taught pottery for 50 years. I just got back
=66rom Schaumburg on April 15. It might be helpful for you to call Innov=
atice
Ceramics, Inc. in Schaumburg as I am sure they can help put you in touch =
with
local potters. Their phone is (847) 981-0422). I called them for some c=
lay
and they even delivered it to my hotel. I was making ceramic ocarinas an=
d it
worked out perfect for me. Sorry I didn't know about you sooner as I thi=
nk I
could have been a help to you.

You might check out the Lill Street Studio. They have a web site:
http://www.lillstreet.com/lillclay.html
Not only will classes and workspace be an option, but I imagine the info.
exchange will be helpful.

I'm not sure what kind of pottery "life" you are imagining, or if I have =
any
useful input into this, but I teach at two places; one is a community
college evening program; the other is for a fine art center. They mostly
give us children's classes and the only reason I stay is to have a networ=
k
of other potters. I understand this is useful, so if I can answer any ot=
her
questions, or if you are looking for a summer job there email me off list=
