Robin Hopper's Book "The Ceramic Spectrum", has a recipe on page 133.
it calls for:
50 units of white ball clay
25 units of potash feldspar and
25 units of silica.
to this add 5% bentonite or 3% Macaloid and up to 15% colourant.
One can also add to the approximately 45% water, a little sodium silicate=
to
give it green strength.
Roll into thin coils and fire to approx 800 degrees C.
I use them in the green ware state. They work like pastels. I find the=
y
are only good for light drawings and lines.

Hi everyone, I would like to know if anyone has a recipe (?) for making
black underglaze pencils?? I checked the archives first and there wasn't
anything there about making the underglaze pencils. I had an article about
the process but lost it over the years. Thanks, Jim

I saw somewhere, I think in the ceramic site of www.about.com
In the meantime try my recipe for ceramic engob.
use basic powder of commercial, engob. for this case, see if you can buy
basic black powder. Now use 50/50 with black stain. Add water, not much i=
n a
way that you can roll in your hands little "hot dogs". If you will add a =
lot
of water, the result will be too soft.now you can dry in the kiln in abou=
t
100C, I know I am cruel, let's say boiling temperature.When the "hot dogs=
"
are dry you can warp around paper. The way it is done with pastels.Like
with painting's pastel( I did both kinds) I believe every stain might hav=
e
different hardness. You do the black, you will learn it.

Jim;
I have not tried this yet, myself. This recipe was in one of the glaze
databases:
CERAMIC PENCILS
Ball Clay 50; Potash Feldspar 25; Silica 25; Sodium silicate 1
Add oxide or stain to achieve the colour you want up to 15%
Mix well, add water. Roll by hand to make a pencil or extrude to diameter
and length required.
Dry and fire to 820C - 920C
Use to draw on bisqued Pots
