When I began studying clay seriously I asked the chicken/egg, wheel/kiln first question.
The advice I got was to get the home kiln first (assuming I had and still have access to a
public recreation center studio) because one can do so much with hand building and then
be able to fire it without transporting. The wheel can come along later. I took that
advice
and have been quite happy I did. The handbuilding has yielded enough income that it
paid for the wheel and now I'm set up to do a full range of ^6 work at home and ^10
at the public studio.
Such is the path for one who has to do clay (and most anything else)
on a strict budget.
