the rule that i used for my entire teaching career was:
never buy a wheel without the kiln. it is a pair/set/forever.
piles of greenware around your house is a real pain, and
transporting to a center to fire is a bigger pain.
save, make the total commitment, then get the wheel, and the kiln.
used works for me.
