wheel buying

Though I haven't tried the Thomas Stuart I am sold on the Shimpo Masters. It is very quiet and reliable and has a smooth pedal. I used to swear by Brent and Creative Industries but.... The new Bailey wheel seems great too but just tried it at NCECA.

Hello all! I am hoping to buy a new wheel soon and was wondering what =3D
the opinions are on the best one for the money. I will be looking at any =
=3D
that have 'unlimited' centering capacity since I always over buy. I am =3D
not interested in the Soldner wheels even though they come highly =3D
recommended. It is just a personal thing with me. Is anyone familiar =3D
with the Creative Industries MP or the new Thomas Stuart electric?

William, Brent CXC would get my vote (excluding the Soldner of course). Jim

I'm not familiar with all wheels but I'm familiar with Brents, Shimpos, and
Pacifica. The Pacifica is the last wheel that I would ever buy.
In order of torque the Shimpo has the most, then the Brent and lastly the
pacifica. I have 2 Shimpo masters and I love them. So if I was to give you
an opinion between the Brent and the Shimpo I would be biased as I think
they are both good wheels. The pacifica is a wheel that seems (to me) to
spend alot of time
broken down. You get what you pay for! The pacifica is I believe one of the
cheapest wheels out there. Brent's and Shimpo's you never hear complaints
about them.

Mr. William Moody,
I purchased a bailey st-200 wheel and it is a good value for the money. I
like it. My favorite wheel I think is a brent cxc but I like some features
on the bailey wheel more.Try them out if you can. Remember haste makes
waste. Don't spend money on something you will not like. Hope that helps.

Hello William,

You'll hear lots of good comments on Brent, Bailey and other wheels. I'll
comment on one that doesn't get much play on the list, but is, in my
opinion, a top-of-the-line wheel.

I've had my Max wheel for nearly 25 years now (they advertise in Ceramics
Monthly if you want to find them). It has performed flawlessly and it will
certainly handle more clay than I can. A couple years ago I got tired of
the 60 cycle hum that was inherent in DC controllers out of the the 1970s
and called them to ask what could be done about it. Also it was jerking
just a little bit at really slow speeds. After trying some adjustments they
recommended I decided it was time for a new controller. I was able to buy a
new controller and foot peddle from Max and figure the wheel is now good for
another 25 years at least. And it is now as quiet as the best of the Brent
or Creative Industries wheels I've used. It is a direct gear drive wheel so
there is no problem with squealing or slipping belts and none of the
rumbling noise of a cone drive wheel. Recently I had a minor problem which
turned out to be my fault. An Email to Martin Shenker, their customer
service rep, was answered in 2 hours with suggestions that successfully
solved my problem. Their service is nothing short of outstanding!

The only negative I have found is that this is not an inexpensive wheel. It
is built to last a lifetime of heavy use and is an excellent long term
investment.

Regards,

John

I'd check out the Pacifica 800. IMHO.

I really think it all comes down to what feels right to you. I have had a
Pacifica 400 for over 8 years now and have had no down time at all. It has
been reliable and quiet and caused me no problems whatsoever and I bought it
used. I think everyone will have their own set of experiences and you just
have to decide what works best for you. Maybe the Pacifica 800s are not as
reliable, I can't say but, the 400 has been just wonderful for me. I use a
Jepson bat ring to enable me to throw on plaster bats and I use a Versa bat
system that lets me use those nice compact square bats for when I'm in
serious mug production mode and I also just use the plain old round masonite
bats as well.
