Joyce is an extremely versatile artist working comfortably with both =

intense clay experience. Please check out her resume and =
homepage.http://www.geocities.com/soho/study/3169/
http://www.hood.edu/artdept/text/joyce.html

Workshop Description: A four day intensive hands-on workshop for =
intermediate and advanced potters, will focus on advanced throwing =
concepts. Designed to build skills and refine technique, the workshop =
will cover information crucial to structural strength in the =
wheel-thrown form and include throwing exercises to increase efficiency. =
Students for this class must be able to throw an eight to twelve-inch =
bowl and a six to eight-inch vase. The more skilled to the entire group, =
the further the progress. To maximize learning, students should plan to =
throw most of each day. Work will not be saved. Students should bring =
150 lbs. of the clay they routinely use and their own personal throwing =
tools. A complete materials list will be provided and a selection of =
advanced tools will be available for experimentation. =20
Date: June 14th - June 17th=20
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with allowances for run over. Joyce =
says she tends to run over and participants should plan extra time in =
their day and allow time for clean up=20
Fee: $200.00=20
Notes: Participants are encouraged to arrive early to unload, =
unpack, and get set up and comfortable before the first class. =
Additional hours for practicing after the daily completion of the =
workshop will be until 6:30 p.m. =20

I was one of 10 folks at the Joyce Michaud Masters Throwing workshop =
last week. It's a 4-day workshop that is VERY INTENSIVE and not for the =
faint of heart or addlepated, lemme tell ya. Joyce is very passionate =
about her way of doing things, which is based in the research of =
somebody named Richard who had a grant back in the 60's to study the way =
clay moves. I'm not clear on exactly how, but NASA was involved, =
because it had to do with space shuttle tiles.

Anyway, the bottom line is the physics of what happens when you apply =
pressure to a mass of clay at any given point, and how to control what =
happens so your throwing is more efficient and less difficult. Most =
people in the workshop threw larger pieces than they ever had before =
using Joyce's methods. We threw bowls off the hump blindfolded too. :) =

If you get the chance to take one of Joyce's workshops, I do recommend =
it. My only "complaints" are that there is no ramp or elevator, so you =
have to lug all your clay and tools down a long flight of concrete =
stairs, and that the workshop did not have enough built-in 'downtime' =
for processing information. =20

To find out when Joyce has these workshops (the next one is Plates and =
Platters, in February), contact her directly at jmichaud@hood.edu

Dear L. P. Skeen

You say <you apply pressure to a mass of clay at any given point, and how to =
control what happens so your throwing is more efficient and less =
difficult.>>

Do you know if this work has been published. Or is it a case of being =
"Top Secret in the National Interest" because of the origins of the =
information.

I would like to know more because I seem to be the only person who has =
been willing to challenge the established notions of what happens when =
we throw clay. On the surface, what you say also challenges those views.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis, Redhill, South Australia.
