It rained here Wednesday...The 4 new shoots were already 17 feet tall
and 2 to 4 inches in diameter by Friday morning.
It rained last night....the new shoots are already 7 feet tall and 2 to 4
inches in diameter this morning.
This type of growth reminds me of the first year that we had a vegetable
garden. Two rows of cucumber plants forced me to make pickles every day. I
felt like there was a monster in my back yard. We now buy Claussen, Rainbow,
and Vlasic pickles so I can have a life outside of the kitchen.
The bamboo is a beautiful monster with so many uses. A very informative
book is "The Book of Bamboo" by David Farrelly. We have even used the tender
shoots in stir-fry......crunchy, but tasteless....requiring lots of garlic
and wine : )

Here in Athens, GA, Michael Stipe's (of REM rock fame) front yard is an
entirely covered with bamboo. Maybe he wants it that way for privacy.
