Carol -
Funny, while you are in Mendocino, I will be in Arizona. My family had a
cabin a mile inland from Mendocino from 1963 to 1992. Things change so fa=
st
in Mendocino, so it is hard to suggest specific galleries. But it is an
artist's community, crammed with shops and galleries. If the Ruth Carlso=
n
Gallery is still there, it is a good one. Gallery Fair was always a very
good gallery. There are always lots of tacky, touristy galleries. In my
very slanted opinion, if you walk in the door of a shop or gallery and sm=
ell
scented candles or lamp oil, just turn around and get the hell back out,
because it is going to be tacky. There are plenty of those in town.
The Mendocino Art Center has a good gallery and is always worth a visit.
There are so many other things to do. The Heeser Headlands on the ocean
front down the road from town are spectacular, as is Russian Gulch State
Park just north of town. If you have not seen the rocky Pacific headland=
s,
you are in for a real treat. Big River Beach just south of town is usual=
ly
crowded, and there are much better beaches north of Fort Bragg. Glass Be=
ach
at the north end of Fort Bragg is often crowded, but is always fun - back=
in
the 19th century it was the town dump, and now it is a beach composed
entirely of polished glass. If you drive north of Fort Bragg a few miles=
to
the sign for Cleone Acres and turn left it will take you down to the sout=
h
end of Ten Mile beach. If you walk north along the beach for a mile or t=
wo
you will be all by yourself, and there are beautiful dunes to explore.
The Skunk Train from Fort Bragg to Willits is a beautiful round trip. If
the weather on the coast is foggy you can drive up Little Lake Road to
Mendocino Woodlands and go skinny-dipping.
Mendocino was a major part of my childhood. I learned to drive on Little
Lake Road. It was very different then - very few tourists, lots of unpav=
ed
roads in town. If anyone wants to see Mendocino in the old days just che=
ck
out the video of "East of Eden" with James Dean. They pass off Mendocino=
as
Monterrey, and in fact when James Dean hops the train from Salinas into
Monterrey, they show a panoramic view of Mendocino, looking north towards
the town from across the mouth of Big River. The film has great shots of
Mendocino in the 1950s. The big mansion in the movie burned down, making
way for the Mendocino Art Center. The whole block that the Art Center
occupies used to be the grounds of that mansion.
Another good Mendocino area film is "The Russians Are Coming The Russians
Are Coming," one of my favorite movies of all time. In that case the are=
a
is passed off as New England. The house where Carl Reiner and Eva Marie
Sainte were living was built just for the movie along the old logging roa=
d
along Ten Mile River Beach. They carefully aged the picket fences with a
blowtorch, and once the movie was done they bulldozed the house and torch=
ed
it. You can still find nails and hardware amidst the sand at the site. =
My
mom loved the way that house appeared and dissappeared so quick, and alwa=
ys
enjoyed visiting that site afterwards, so we scattered some of her ashes
there. If you hike north from the south end of Ten Mile Beach, it is the
last bluff before the trail drops down to the beach.
But I digress . . . . . . . .
If you have any specific questions about the Mendocino area please email =
me.

I will be staying in Mendocino during the first week of June. Could anyone
recommend things that are "must sees"? Good galleries? Interesting potters?
Arizona is already at 106. Can't wait for cool ocean air.
Thanks for any suggestions,

Carol,
Check out the Mendocino Art Center: www.mendocinoartcenter.org. There are,
in addition, a number of other potters in the general area. I recommend the
pottery called Nichibei; you can find them and other potteries nearby on
www.clayzee.com (an Australian site that lists a number of California
potters). Also check Chris Clarke's new list of CA potters.

Carol,
There are potters all over the North Coast area in and around Mendocino. A must stop is the Mendocino Art Center. They should be able to direct you to local studios that may be open to visitors. There are LOTS of galleries within a easy drive of Mendocino. Just to the north (20 min) in Fort Bragg are several coop galleries which have a lot of work by local potters. When you stop in at the art center, Kent Rothman is the Ceramics coordinator and he should be able to direct you to the best local spots for ceramics. The MAC has a great web site. Just do a search for the Mendocino Art Center and you'll find it. Mendocino is a great place to visit for a artist. Very inspiring. Have fun----take lots of money.
