Bob,
There's only one pottery in Gruene, Texas (hill country,
not too far from the LBJ ranch). The town is outside
San Antonio. They sponsor a festival. See:

Though I'm not sure about a contest. Try
sending some email to them.

Hi Sandy,
Actually I know of at least two potteries in Gruene, TX. The one that
holds the Texas clay fest is Buck Pottery operated by Dee and Terry Buck. I
love their worm wood fired pieces. The festival is usually the third weekend
in October and it is fantastic. The other is just around the block and it's
name is Dos Rios pottery. They have a very nice setup but I can't think of
their names right now. He does most of the throwing and she complements them
with some beautiful carvings. She works in sight of the customers so they can
watch if they like and most of the work I saw has a green celadon glaze.
Ron Boling also works out of Gruene but I don't think he has a shop in
town. He favors raku and has work in galleries I believe. You may also like
to make the short trip to San Marcos to see Billy Ray Mangum at Sleeping Dog
Pottery. He has been featured in CM and has pretty regular work shops. I
think his web site is http://zzzdog.com/.
I hope this helps. If you get a chance anyone should try to see the
clay fest at least once. You can sit back a watch any of the 30 - 35 potters
demonstrate their work and take in some beautiful Texas hill country. Then
walk across the street to Gruene Hall for something cool to drink. Maybe
you'll get lucky and Jerry Jeff Walker will be there. It's fun enough to make
me drive a couple hundred miles each year.

See ya,
Claude
