These workshops provide opportunities for people to have a hands-on
experience with clay, while at the same time benefiting the Tile Heritage
Foundation. We salute all of the fine teachers who are offering workshops
once again this year. Classes are open to all who want to get their hands=

clay or to work with tiles irrespective of their previous experience.

STORYTELLER DOLLS with Juanita DuBray
Taos, New Mexico / June 29 - July 1, 2001 / $245 (3 days, includes
materials)
Description: Juanita DuBray is a Native American artist and teacher,
well-known for her fine craftsmanship and workshops in the history and
making of storyteller dolls from native clays. These dolls emerge from th=
e
artist=3DB9s childhood experiences, native legends and stories her elders=
share=3D
d
with her. Thus, the dolls are not just images; they are the stories
themselves. This 3-day workshop will give participants the opportunity to
mold their own stories into their work. Juanita was born at Taos Pueblo a=
nd
her Native American background inspired her interest in pottery. She has
been a lifelong resident of the Pueblo and has studied Native American ar=
ts
and history.=3D20

TILE MAKING & MOSAIC MURAL WORKSHOP with Donna Billick
Davis, California / July 7 - 8, 2001/ $ 165 (2 days, includes materials)
Description: Participants working with Donna Billick, internationally kno=
wn
sculptor, clay and ceramic artist, will learn handmade tile building
techniques including clay slab construction, carving and impressing.
Underglaze painting will also be taught as well as broken tile mosaic
techniques. Some of the pieces produced during this workshop will be used=
i=3D
n
a portal to a park, part of a public art project, which is underway. Find

BAS RELIEF TILE MAKING AND LOW-FIRE GLAZE TECHNIQUES with Randy Fein
Camden, Maine/ July 14 - 15, 2001 / $165 (2 days, includes materials)
Description: Randy Fein is a talented sculptor, teacher and clay artist. =
Sh=3D
e
has completed eighteen large public tile installations throughout New
England and has taught extensively, including teaching assistantships at
Penland and Haystack. This workshop will introduce the participants to ma=
ny
aspects of tile making and glazing. You will be drawn into the magic of
having your hands in clay. In the process you will develop your own visua=
l
vocabulary, drawing from ancient cultural images as well as contemporary
icons. During the 3-day assimilation process you will create relief tiles
with decorative, personal symbols, which express who you, are. Students w=
il=3D
l
use low fire glazes and underglazes to achieve colorful imagery and
patterns.

CAST CEMENT AND MOSAIC with Dmitry Grudsky
Newark, California / August 20 - 24, 2001/ $330 (5 days, includes materia=

Description: Dmitry Grudsky was educated at the Institute of Art in Russi=
a
and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree. He specializes in Monument and
Decorative Art. Participants in this workshop will be introduced to
Byzantine, Roman, Florentine and contemporary mosaic. The class will cove=
r
design, molding, embedding, framing, casting and grouting techniques usin=
g =3D
a
myriad of materials and fluid forms. Dmitry=3DB9s visually beautiful, scu=
lptura=3D

pieces have been commissioned throughout the Bay Area and can be enjoyed =
at
the Peralta Community Garden in Berkeley, California.

HAND BUILDING AND CARVING ON LARGE TILES with Kenyon Lewis
Cloverdale, California/ September 8 - 9, 2001/ $165 (2 days, includes
materials)
Description: Kenyon Lewis holds a BFA from the University of Oregon. He i=
s
an innovative master ceramist and a skilled mold maker. He will teach bot=
h
high and low relief sculptural carving as well as glazing, drying and fir=
in=3D
g
techniques. He will pay special attention to teaching methods designed to
minimize the likelihood of warping and maximizing both aesthetic and

MACHINERY CAN MAKE ART with George and Suzan Lea
Panama City Beach, Florida/ October 29 - November 2, 2001/ $330 (5 days,
includes materials)
Description: Join master crafts persons George and Suzan Lea in a 5-day
intensive, hands-on workshop on tile making using cuerda seca screen
printing and aluminum die-making techniques. All aspects of these process=
es
will be thoroughly discussed and demonstrated. Hands-on glaze formulation
will also be taught. A workshop NOT to be missed!
Class is limited to 14 people.

Foundation and the aforementioned artists and studios and any of their
affiliated entities, including but not limited to their officers,
representatives, employees, administrators and assigns, from any and all
claims, complaints, liabilities, obligations, promises, damages, costs,
losses ("claims") which may arise out of my participation or election to
participate in the aforementioned activities, including but not limited t=
o
claims for delays, cancellations, injuries or death, or for the loss of o=

damage to my property occurring during any portion of or relating to any =

the workshops described in this booklet. I agree that this release shall
bind my heirs, executors, other legal representatives and all members of =

The Tile Heritage Foundation and the aforementioned artists and studios
assume no responsibilities for losses or expenses caused by illness,
weather, wars or acts of Nature. The Tile Heritage Foundation and the

workshop schedule. In the event of a cancellation by Tile Heritage or an
individual artist or studio, full fees will be refunded. Up to 21 days pr=

refund less a $15 administration fee. Cancellation after that time will n=
