Dear Carole Fox,

Well, I would have asked the "Respected Clay Artist" if that admonition =
applied equally to glazes containing iron oxide.

I would also have asked him if he was really talking about nails and =
bolts and things that are being incorporated into ceramic sculpture by =
some practitioners.

If he was just meaning the iron oxides and other iron minerals which are =
natural to some stoneware clays, then I think he owes you a detailed =
explanation which elucidates the science and technology which supports =
his assertions. If he meant nails and wire, then there is potential for =
a hazard.

Based on twenty five years of firing stoneware in electric kilns, =
including one kiln for seven years and another for ten years, I would =
like to know, if what I was doing was wrong, why it was wrong?

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis
