Hi All,
I think I've read through all the posts on this fine black glaze. As
usual, John Hesselberth has done a good job of pointing out why common sense
says this is a food-safe glaze.
It hasn't been mentioned on the list for a while, so I want to add that
manganese dioxide in any glaze presents real hazards to the potter. The
hazard is in the studio and in the firing. Exposure to manganese fumes from
the kiln may not be good for your health! Likewise, exposure to MnO2 in
dust or otherwise is not wise.
This doesn't mean one can't or shouldn't use manganese dioxide. Just be
very aware of the hazard, and take adequate steps to prevent personal
exposure. Good kiln venting and good hygiene in the studio are especially
important when working with MnO2.
