In my book pottery wins every time....Glass work is more of an =
industrial process than it is art....I saw Chihuly's big "Tornado" at an =
opening in Dallas....It consisted of a hundred or so bottle =
shapes(closed and pointy at the top) hung from the ceiling...Sorry but I =
wasn't that impressed...I'm sure someone paid the $60000....And my own =
sister got pissed and was gonna walk 25 miles accross Dallas cause I =
told her one of my big 'ol pots was worth $2000....Why is it that real =
art ends up with a universal devaluing while production crap goes for =
$600 a crappy red bottle....Sure glass production requires skill and =
experience....but it can be done by anyone who has been hired and =
trained...and it can be repeated ad infintum.....crap....pretty =
crap...easy eyecandy with no soul..
Is it all a matter of promotion?...Has Chihuly yakked his way into =
a rep as an artist?....Spend money on production and promotion...To hell =
with art...By his own addmission he hasn't done any work since he lost =
an eye in 78....Van Goph lost an ear and it only made his stuff more =
powerful....I would rather own one of DC's late sketches than one of the =
thousands of pieces of crap turned out by his factory...I will keep =
making Art Pottery and giving it away Thank You.....Of course if you =
wanna buy one of my pieces; I'm sure we can work something outHEHEHE
Rush

I've heard people say the same thing about pottery.
Funny thing... the people saying this weren't potters, and didn't have
the inclination or time to study the medium.

I've heard people saying the same thing about photography.
Funny thing, the people saying this weren't photographers, and didn't
have the inclination or time to study the medium.

Is is that you just don't recognize the skill if it is't one that you
have?

Seems to me that you haven't the first clue about what art is, unless it
happens to be in a medium that you have some knowledge of. Nor do you
have the insight to realize that just because you don't know the medium,
that you might not have even the basic minimum of knowledge to allow you
to form even a slightly informed opinion of that which you dismiss so
glibly.

Here is a good link that seems pertinent. I'm a glassblower that started
out as a potter. The two forms seem very similar to me. They use the same
formative forces- centrifical (sp?) force and gravity, substituting heat
(glass) for moisture (clay).
